The RSPB Maidstone Local Group - About the RSPB |
||||||
The RSPB was founded in 1889 by a band of Victorian gentlewomen who shared their horror of the destruction of birds to obtain their feathers for adorning hats.
Early campaigns were aimed at the plumage trade, the use of pole traps and against the trapping of songbirds.
It is now the largest wildlife charity in Europe with over one million members including 150,000 junior members. It is the UK partner of Birdlife International.
Its headquarters are at Sandy, Bedfordshire with regional offices throughout the UK, see rspb.org.uk for further details.
It is not a bird (or animal) welfare organisation. Your nearest RSPCA clinic or animal centre will provide expertise for wildlife casualties.
Its actions for conserving birds and wildlife amongst others include researching conservation issues, working with central and local government, industry and land owners, acquiring and managing nature reserves and promoting youth education.
As a charity (No. 207076) it relies on income from its membership and donations. As a member you can help to protect the future of all birds and their habitats.
Benefits include free admission to over 120 nature reserves and receipt of a quarterly Birds magazine.
